Born just five years after the end of the Civil War, Robert Sengstacke Abbott attended Hampton Institute in Virginia and then went on to graduate from Kent Law School (now Chicago-Kent College of Law) in 1899. Abbott founded and published The Chicago Defender, one of the most important black newspapers in history, in 1905.
